What I Wore - Inspired by Marie from Marie Loves...

When I tried on this outfit combination Tuesday night, I immediately thought of Marie of Marie Loves... and how she would wear an outfit like this. The basic color combination is so very her. {Marie, I love your outfits and I'm so glad you are back blogging!} In fact, since we've been back home I've been wearing more basic colors together with just a touch of whimsy & pop of color. I go through moods. Also my surroundings affect my outfits - so does the weather & how I feel. 

I promised I would share what I bought at the antique mall today. So without further ado, what I bought. 

   On the bottom left we have a vintage handbag in navy blue {I think it is from the 50s/60s}. While in the middle we have a black Kate Spade purse from either the late 90s or early 2000s {I'm really excited about this purchase, as one of my goals for 2012 was to buy a Kate Spade purse. And here I found one for $11}. The bottom right purse is a lovely brown shade vintage handbag {50s/60s?} in some kind of print, or type of leather or something. I don't know much about vintage purses at all, and there are no markings in any of the vintage bags. 

Here we have three magazines from 1940. The two in the back are LOOK magazine and the front one is a movie magazine called, Photoplay. I'm going to do scans of these magazines sometime next year, along with tons of other magazines I own - really I own stacks.

I'm so excited to share with y'all my find on Etsy. A 1939/1940 Fall/Winter Sears & Roebuck Catalog! There is so much information packed into this thick catalog. Books, clothing, sewing supplies, beauty products, and so much more. It is simply glorious! Here is just a sneak peak into the catalog. And I may, or may not have gone overboard on the pictures. ;-) But I tell you, this is just a small fraction of the catalog.

One of the things I loved most about browsing through this catalog is the colors. I never imagined them wearing these bright colors. Don't know why. But it never crossed my mind that they would. I always thought of the era in more muted tones.

Etsy Shopping Spree

There is nothing like shopping on Etsy. You can find almost anything you are looking for on there. May that be vintage, handmade, or supplies. It is best for me to not go searching on Etsy too often. ;-) Well, this weekend I wanted to buy some vintage magazines for BF's birthday (I mentioned it in this post). Guess what? I found some awesome things for my magazine collection! Like really good stuff. The pictures in this post show a sneak peak to some of the magazines I bought. ;-) I'll show them all to you in their full glory once they all arrive in the mail. *smiles*

I have a question. Have any of you had good success buying and wearing vintage clothing that you have bought off of Etsy? I'm such an odd size (32-28-38) that I'm afraid the clothes will either be too big on top, or too tight around my waist & hips. Give me your thoughts and tips on buying vintage clothing online. Oh, I'm also looking for mostly 1950s and early 60s dresses {maybe a few other pieces too}. Like the ones Jessica @ What I Wore and Casey @ Elegant Musings wear. 


For those who collect vintage magazines. How do you store yours? I have a fairly large collection (maybe between 25-40?). Right now all of my magazines that don't fit into a modern magazine box-thing (from IKEA), which is most of them, are just laying on my bedroom floor. Not very good. I look forward to hearing what y'all have to say.

Movie Life - April 1940

I was going to post pictures of all the magazines I bought last month. But that post would be a mile long. ;) As the magazines I bought are filled with wonderful pictures. I love buying old magazines - they have so much history stored away in them! 

The magazine I'll be featuring today is one of my favorite - Movie Life (April, 1940). Why? It has an article of one of my favorite actresses - Deanna Durbin. That may, or may not be the reason why I bought this magazine. ;) *laughs*

Look! Cary Grant takes an old family friend to the premiere of My Girl Friday {I love that movie!}. Also the Los Angeles' Mayor greets Rosalind Russell at Girl Friday press party. In the bottom picture Olivia de Havilland is sporting the new pompadour hair-do. 

  Here we have, Errol Flynn, Anne Shirley, and Shirley Temple.

Have you seen the film, Young Tom Edison (1940) starring Mickey Rooney? I grew up watching this film so it was fun seeing this little spread. 

This page is filled with stars! We have a wedding picture of Ronald Reagan & Jane Wyman. Katharine Hepburn {in a darling dress and pumps!}, Raymond Massey & Mrs. Roosevelt! That's just on the top row of pictures. Underneath we have Mickey Rooney, Pat O'Brain, Gene Autry, Olivia de Havilland, and many others.

Half-Price Book Sale Findings

Well, yesterday was our library's half-price day. So of course, we went. I found even more treasures! Some of what I bought will be featured as scans on my other blog: A Girls Guide to Home Life.  =)

1. Christmas Carols and Hymns (1959) Piano Songbook - I bought this for Gabrielle as I can't read a note. 2. Sabrina (1954) VHS - I can't wait to see this movie with Audrey Hepburn & Humphrey Bogart! =)

1. David Copperfield by Charles Dickens (1867) - I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the copyright on this book, 1867!!! This is the oldest book I own personally. 2. Familiar Quotations (early turn of the century 1900s) - I love looking at books filled quotes and this is one of my favorites.

 1. When We Were Very Young by: A. A. Milne ( 1927) - A fun collection of poems by A. A. Milne, the author of Winnie-the-Pooh. 2. The Book of Good Manners by: Frederick H. Martens (1923) - One can never have too many etiquette books and I have several. ;-)

 1. The Five Little Peppers by: Margaret Sidney (1950) - This was one of my series during my teen-years, well they still are. =) Have any of you read this wonderful series?  2. All-Of-A-Kind-Family Downtown by: Sidney Taylor (1972) - Another favorite series of mine. I think what I like about this series and the Peppers is that we are like both families. =)

1. Color Me Beautiful by: Carole Jackson (1984) - I've seen my friends talk about this book and I have wanted to learn about people's seasons - including my own. 2. Collection of Crocheting Patterns pulled from magazines and booklets (1940s - 50s) - Two file folders filled with crocheting patterns for only $1!!! What a deal! Now, I just need to learn how to read these patterns as I know how to crochet.

1. LOOK Magazine (December 26, 1944) - A fun Christmas edition. It includes a review of one of my WWII movies, Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo. And just have lots of fun pictures of the era. Some of you might recognize the magazine name from an episode of I Love Lucy.

1. Woman's Day (September & October 1954)  & Every Woman's (August & October 1954) - Both magazines are filled with how-to's, recipes, fashion articles, adds, stories, and lots of fun vintage stuff!

1. Family Circle (August 1954) - Another fun vintage magazine.

I can promise you that, there won't be another book sale post for awhile. =)
